This June we celebrate World Wind Day, on June 15th. The use of wind as an energy source is very old. Before the invention of the steam engine, ships were powered by the energy of the winds, which were captured by sails and used to move boats and ships. The wind was also used to move mills that performed important jobs in food production.

For wind energy, the amount of energy transferred is a function of the density of the air, the area covered by the rotation of the blades and the speed of the wind. The technical assessment of wind potential requires detailed knowledge of wind behavior. The data related to this behavior – which help to determine the wind potential of a region – are related to the intensity of the wind speed and direction. To obtain these data, it is also necessary to analyze the factors that influence the wind regime in the project location. Among them we can mention the relief, the roughness of the soil and other obstacles distributed throughout the region.

The Cotesa

In the last three years, Cotesa Engineering started its participation in the wind sector and is already responsible for operating 1.4 GW, almost 10% of the share of all installed capacity in Brazil, carrying out the Operation & Maintenance services of ten wind power plants in five Brazilian states. According to the commercial manager at Cotesa Engineering, Felipe Andreas, the company's planning involves expanding its share of the wind market to 20%. “The wind sector is already the second matrix base for electricity generation and has a growth of 2GW per year. Cotesa will reinforce its performance in this field to continue being recognized as a partner of the Brazilian electricity sector”, he commented.
