The ten largest power plants in Brazil

With continental dimensions, Brazil needs more than 9,800 power plants to not be left in the dark. They are assets of all sizes, mainly distributed in the North, Northeast and Southeast regions.

Despite representing only 2.22% of the number of projects, the Hydroelectric Power Plants are responsible for 57.17% of the installed capacity in Brazil. Meanwhile, Photovoltaic Plants account for 46.8% of the amount of assets but only 2.48% of the power.

Check the table below for details on each energy source, according to data provided by Aneel on November 10, 2021:

Therefore, it is not surprising that the ten largest power generating plants are all Hydroelectric Power Plants. Together, these assets have an installed power of 47,056,300.00 kW.

Check the list below for the Ranking of the 10 largest power plants in Brazil.

1 – Belo Monte HPP (PA)

Brazil has the cleanest and most renewable energy matrix on the planet and the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant, installed on the Xingu River, in Pará, contributes to this result. With installed capacity of 11.233,1 MW e quantidade média de geração de energia de 4.571 MW, Belo Monte se firma como a maior hidrelétrica 100% brasileira.

2 – Tucuruí HPP (PA)

Considered the largest engineering work ever carried out in the Amazon territory, Tucuruí HPP has an installed generating capacity of 8.535 MW and has the second largest spillway in the world, with a capacity of 110,000 m³/s. The Tucuruí dam, made of earth, is 11 km long and 78 m high.

3 – Itaipu HPP (PR – Brazilian part)

Itaipu HPP is a binational asset, located on the Paraguay River on the border with Paraguay, and shares its generation with the neighboring country. Itaipu supplies around 10.8% of the energy consumed in Brazil and 88.5% of Paraguay's consumption, being the largest generator of clean and renewable energy on the planet.

4 – Jirau HPP (RO)

With the generation of 3.750 MW, Jirau HPP has the capacity to supply more than ten million homes. There are two powerhouses with an area equipped for assembly and maintenance of 50 generating units, with 75 MW of unit power.

5 – Santo Antônio HPP (RO)

Composed of 50 bulb-type turbines, Santo Antônio HPP has an installed capacity of 3.568 MW. Part of the turbines are of exclusive generation for Rondônia and Acre, also contributing to supply the Southeast and other regions of Brazil.

6 – Ilha Solteira HPP (SP)

The largest plant in São Paulo, Ilha Solteira HPP is part of the Urubupungá Complex, the sixth largest hydroelectric complex in the world. Its installed power is 3.444 MW and has 20 generating units with Francis turbines, which generate from a maximum height difference of 41.5 m.

7 – Xingó HPP (AL – SE)

The generating plant is composed of six Siemens units with 527 kW of unit rated power, totaling 3.162 kW of installed power. However, the asset can reach an installed capacity of 5,270 MW if four more identical generators are built, which are foreseen in the plant.

8 – Paulo Afonso IV HPP (BA)

The underground engine room has six generating units with a nominal capacity of 410,400 kW, totaling 2.462.400 kW. The Paulo Afonso IV HPP is part of the Paulo Afonso Hydroelectric Complex, which produces 4,279.6 MW of energy.

9 – Itumbiara HPP (GO)

There are six generating units in operation, in the sheltered powerhouse model, with an installed capacity of 2.082 MW. According to the National Electric System Operator (ONS) the lake at UHE Itumbiara is capable of storing 7.89% of the volume that can be repressed by the reservoirs of the Southeast/Midwest System.

10 – Teles Pires HPP (PA)

With installed capacity of 1.820 MW, the UHE Teles Pires generates enough energy to supply a population of 13.5 million inhabitants.
